Phrasal Verbs (get up, break down, fill in etc.)

We often use verbs with these words:
  • on
  • off
  • back
  • over
  • in
  • about
  • out
  • up
  • etc.
We often use these words with verbs of movement.
For example:
  • get on ---> The train was full. We couldn't get on.
  • turn round ----> When I touched her on the shoulder, she turned round.
  • come back ---> Jim is leaving next week and coming back on Wednesday.
  • drive off ---> He got into the car and drove off
But often these words (on/off/up/down etc.) give a special meaning to a verb.
For example:
  • Sorry I'm late. The car broke down.
  • Look out!! There's a bus coming.
  • I was so tired this morning that I couldn't get up.
  • How did you get on in your examination yesterday?
These verbs (break down/get on/get up etc.) are phrasal verbs.
